Novel (76,000 words)
Genre(s): Science Fiction, M/M

Unfortunately those talents make him a target for the brutal crime lords and other violent denizens who inhabit the city of Nhil-Rhar. PATHFINDER released today!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Pathfinder is now available on Smashwords!!!! It will be available on Amazon Kindle as well very soon (Amazon takes a little longer to release their titles). I am so excited to have this book out there once again, especially as I am hard at work putting the finishing touches on Pathfinder 2.

I edited the story quite a bit for this newest edition, and expanded a couple of scenes. All together, there are about a thousand more words in this current version of the book, but there have been no substantive changes made. It's still the same story it was before.

Please feel free to spread the word to anyone you think might be interested! :)

The Ouroboros Prophecy

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I just received the proof for the new release of my m/m scifi novel Pathfinder, which is nearly ready for publication! It turned out absolutely beautiful and I am so excited to share it. I've given the novel a thorough re-editing in anticipation of its debut with my new publisher. While it's the same general story as it was before, I ended up tightening it up quite a bit as well as expanding a few of the passages. All in all, there's about a thousand more words in this newest edition of the story.

I'm also excited about the release of Pathfinder 2: The Ouroboros Prophecy, which is following close on the heels of the original book. i don't have a finished proof yet, but it is very, very close to being done. I've added a sample from the story to the book's webpage if you'd like to take a peek at it:

*** Click here to read it! ***

I'm expecting that Pathfinder will be ready to go by the end of this week. I'll post more information as soon as I have it!

Pathfinder 2: The Ouroboros Prophecy

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'm busily writing away this morning, putting Pathfinder 2: The Ouroboros Prophecy through its final edits before publication. I am so happy with the way this book has turned out, and am so excited to finally be getting the opportunity to share it!

Here is the cover for the new book, just to whet your appetites:

The Ouroboros Prophecy (Pathfinder Book 2)
by J.A. Jaken
Novel (145,000 words)
Genre(s): Science Fiction, Gay, Romance

A vision drawn from the mind of a dying member of an Outrider clan draws Shai and Lorne back into the city of Nhil-Rhar, where they are pulled into a deadly conspiracy. Pathfinders are having dreams of destruction and chaos, criminal factions are battling openly in the streets, and a mysterious virus has been unleashed in the Agency's computers. On the fringes of it all lurks a dark figure that Shai can sense but not see, a figure that is neither pathfinder nor guide yet somehow--impossibly--more powerful than both. Time is running out, and if he doesn't solve the mystery of the ouroboros prophecy, not only his life but the lives of the Outriders and everyone in Nhil-Rhar will be forfeit.

As many of you may already be aware, several of my books are transitioning between publishers and have been unavailable for the past couple of months. I have good news on that front: new covers are being made and they are moving steadily forward toward their new publication dates!

My bestselling novel Pathfinder will be the first re-release. I'm expecting it will be made available sometime later this month. I'll post more updates as soon as I know more!

The Magician's Apprentice

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It's finally happening!!! At long last, "The Magician's Apprentice" is being published as an original novel. I also have plans to publish the four stories that follow it (the Dragon Mage Chronicles): Stormdrake, Seadrake, Firedrake, and Wardrake. I've already had covers made for those four books and am absolutely beside myself over how beautiful they are. But I'm going to wait to share them to hopefully draw out the suspense a little bit. ^_^

If you'd like to support the series, feel free to visit the Magician's Apprentice page on Goodreads and add it to your watch list:

You can also check out the book's page on my website and ooh and ahh over the gorgeous cover:

Feel free to share the word with anyone you think might be interested! I'll post more updates as the publication date draws closer. :D

The Magician's Apprentice (prequel to the Dragon Mage Chronicles)
by J.A. Jaken
Novel (108,000 words)
Genre(s): Fantasy/Adventure, M/M Romance

Jander Teregnan has never wanted anything more than to become a mage--to serve his king and defend his country as he explores his natural talent at commanding the strange power known as magic. Of course every apprentice needs a master, which comes with its own set of challenges...especially when the master he's chosen for himself is none other than Andrei Teresh, personal advisor to the king and master mage of the city of Vallerin.

Andrei, however, has more pressing problems on his mind than dealing with the unsolicited advances of one untrained mage-apprentice. A fierce and merciless army of unknown intent is sweeping across the land, threatening the kingdom he has sworn to protect. Even worse, dragons--long thought to have withdrawn from the world of mankind--are emerging once again and spreading chaos in their wake. Somehow, Jander must find a way to help; not only to prove that he can be of use in the defense of his kingdom and become a mage, but also to secure his place at the side of the man he hopes to claim as master both of his magic and his heart.

Happy New Year!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Happy New Year!!! I hope all of you have a wonderful and safe 2019 filled with love, friendship, happiness, and lots of good stories to read. :)

Look for lots of changes coming in the new year. Many of my books are shifting publishers starting in 2019, which means there may be a bit of a delay where they will be temporarily unavailable. But they will each come online very soon!!! I will post updates as often as I can to keep you all informed of their current status.

The books that are affected by the publishing turnover are:

The House of Silence series
Nicholi's Vengeance
The Charming
His Whipping Boy
Pathfinder

I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. But there is good news as well! Two of my newest novels that have been on hold for some time now will very soon be available! Pathfinder 2: The Ouroboros Prophesy and The Magician's Apprentice are both waiting on covers and will be released quite soon.

Merry Christmas!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Merry Christmas, everyone! This has been such a busy year for me. I sold a house and bought a new one, and ended up staying with my parents for nearly a month while I waited to move in to the new place. It's not quite home here yet, but it's definitely getting there. The new house has got nice, big rooms with lots of natural light, and a yard big enough to have a pool put in later next year. I'm so excited and happy to be here!

The fourth book in the Sacred Guardian series is on a bit of a hold as my editor is dealing with some personal issues and hasn't been able to finish beta reading for me as of yet. I'm hoping for good news soon and will post updates as soon as I get them.

I hope all of you had a wonderful year filled with love, friendship, and lots of happiness!

Sacred Guardian update

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Book number 4 in the Sacred Guardian m/m fantasy series is currently with my editor, and I'm hoping to get the initial review back soon. I am really, really excited about how the story turned out! I've had such a blast building the world these characters live in over the past few books, and this latest one has given me the opportunity to dig more into the country of Kazure's past as well as the underlying magical structure that this universe uses. Plus I absolutely adore both Kaori and Hunter, and have enjoyed bringing them further along the road of the relationship they're forging together.

This might be the final book in the series, because it ties up a lot of the loose ends I've left hanging from the previous novels. But we'll have to see what the future holds. The Sacred Guardian series has given me the chance to indulge my love of m/m romance in addition to my love of high fantasy, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Every moment I've spent working on the series has felt like the most decadent indulgence: magic and mystery, adventure and romance, fantastical creatures, intrigue, plots and betrayals, and a cast of characters I have grown extremely fond of. ♥

Writing

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I find myself endlessly fascinated by the process of writing. It feels a bit like painting a picture, or at least what I imagine that would be like. Coming up with the initial plot is like sketching the outlines, laying down all of those broad strokes. Then it's time to sit down to the serious business of writing and begin filling in the details, layering on different themes and meanings and characterizations and scenes. Sometimes I paint myself into a corner and getting the words out feels like swimming through molasses--such a frustrating experience! That's when I have to step back for a moment, take a deep breath, and look back to see where I went wrong. Once I find it (and I usually do, eventually), I can start moving forward again, and the colors of the portrait I'm making once again start to feel so very vibrant and alive.

Just a few random thoughts because I'm feeling pensive this morning.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you who are celebrating today. My family is planning to take me out to Red Lobster for dinner later, which I am very much looking forward to. I may be mistaken, but I think there is a shrimp fest running now. Even if it's not the food is always wonderful there, and I go there so rarely it is always a treat.

Hope you're all having a wonderful weekend!

Writing writing writing....

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I just finished writing chapter 3 in the next book in the Sacred Guardian series. I'm so excited over this newest story!!! This is the part I love best about being a writer, when the images and ideas flow so effortlessly through my imagination, and I can experience seeing those worlds that exist so vividly inside my head come to life on the screen in front of me. It's the sheer orgasmic rush of creation, as addictive now as it's ever been. It's the reason I'm still writing stories after all these years -- I write because I can't not write, like the stories in my head are alive and somehow begging to be told.

Kaori and Hunter are off on another adventure in this one, and I'm absolutely loving it so far. More than the fun of losing myself in an absorbing fantasy, I enjoy watching the characters I created grow and evolve over the course of these books. I don't think any of them are the same as they were when I first started the series, and there are more changes in store for them. I look at them and I feel a strange sense of possessiveness, of accomplishment. I feel proud of what I've managed to create in this series.

Just some random thoughts on a Friday night as I take a brief break before diving back into writing. Don't expect to see me come up for air again for quite a while. ^_^

Sacred Guardian Book 4

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Just began writing chapter 1 of the next book in the Sacred Guardian series. I'm loving it so far and already can't wait to share it!

A small taste of what's to come:

"A little higher," Ishaya said, frowning thoughtfully at the wall in front of him.

Dutifully, the servants raised the portrait a couple of inches, supporting the weight of the elaborately crafted wooden frame evenly between them.

"That's it," Ishaya told them with a sigh of satisfaction. "Hang the portrait there, if you please."

Standing in the doorway of the hall, Kaori watched as the servants went to work obeying Ishaya's instructions. He couldn't help feeling a frisson of pleasure as his eyes caressed the portrait once again. He had presented it to Hunter as a gift to celebrate their upcoming wedding, which was—as impossible and wonderful as it seemed—going to be held in just a couple of weeks. He had sent all the way to Uruma to petition a master artist to paint it for them. Larger than life, it depicted both him and Hunter seated in front of a tree in the rear garden, which was hanging heavy with the blooms of spring. The artist had done a phenomenal job; Hunter's face was turned toward him just slightly in the painting, a small smile tugging at the corners of his elegantly shaped mouth. Somehow, the artist had captured the familiar shine of devotion and affection that lived in his eyes, and softly defined the lines of his face. Kaori's own face was tilted toward him, close enough to kiss. The adoration in his expression was nearly blinding; he wondered if he really looked that besotted whenever he looked at Hunter.

He suspected he probably did.

Sacred Guardian Review

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Sharing the link to an absolutely beautiful review for Through the Last Door:

https://faridamestek.blogspot.com/2018/05/book-review-through-last-door-by-ja.html

Some highlights:

"From the moment I started reading THROUGH THE LAST DOOR I had an impression of a masterfully crafted book, steeped in history, tradition, myth and lore of that incredible fantasy world the author has created. I felt like every word and every sentence was cherished and honed to perfection, creating a deliciously rich narrative, full of vivid descriptions, endearing characters, intriguing relationships and steadfast friendships."

I am beyond thrilled! Those were exactly the feelings I was attempting to express when I wrote the book, and it is so very rewarding to see that I succeeded (at least with this particular reader). Thank you so much, Farida.

Thank you!!!

Thank you to everyone who made the promotion for Through the Last Door such a huge success this past weekend! At its height, the book reached #2 in LGBT Fantasy, #6 in Gay Fiction, and #78 out of Fantasy fiction in general on Amazon. Pretty amazing!!!

The free promotion has ended, but the book is still available to purchase for just $2.99, and is available to read without additional cost through Kindle Unlimited. If you've read the book and want to experience more of the adventures of Kaori and Hunter, there are two additional books in the series so far:

Thank you again to everyone who helped me out with the promotion, whether by downloading a copy of the book or spreading the word far and wide or simply offering me support and encouragement as I dealt with the frenzy of book marketing over the weekend (which is honestly my least favorite part of writing books). You're an amazing group of people and I couldn't have done this without you!
